Additive Manufacturing part quality: surface finishing challenges and recent research

Join Guest Speaker, Bethan Smith, of the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), and Najib Baig, of Granta Design, as they discuss the challenges of surface finish of built AM components (tolerances, complexity, roughness) and available technologies and standards to address those challenges. Furthermore, you will discover how you can manage AM data from across the entire process chain to improve final part quality.

What you will learn

  • Discover technologies and research from MTC on AM finishing, learn what current standards are, what data you should be collecting, and what you should be looking out for, in the future
  • Watch a demonstration of best practice AM data management including full traceability of your powder, machine, builds, and test data

Who should take part?

  • Project managers, materials engineers, or Additive Manufacturing specialists who are involved in AM projects.
  • Key stakeholders, engineering management, VPs

About the presenters

Bethan Smith
Bethan Smith is acting team leader for the Non-Conventional Machining theme within the Manufacturing Technology Centre, this theme incorporates technologies such as wire EDM, laser based technologies for drilling, cleaning and texturing, and a range of technologies for finishing complex additively manufactured (AM) parts. Specific responsibilities include the management of relevant research projects in this area and contribution to the technical strategy and direction for the technology theme. For the last 3 years she has been leading and delivering projects in the post-processing for AM research area within NCM, where new machining and finishing technologies are required to enable additive parts to meet standards for high value manufacturing industries. Current and past project partners include companies from a range of sectors such as Rolls-Royce, Meggitt, GE, SAAB and ESA.
