Material and Process Universe

MaterialUniverse is at the heart of GRANTA EduPack. It is a unique database compiled by Prof Mike Ashby and the team at Ansys Granta, covering information on all classes of materials and processes. 

Level 1  supports introductory teaching, with images of how materials are used, explanatory text, and selected property data for 69 of the most common materials.

Level 2 expands this coverage.

Level 3 provides comprehensive property data for as more than 3,900 types of materials: ideal for project-work at advanced level.

The database enables comparison across materials classes by making sure that a core set of properties are complete for every material.

GRANTA EduPack Introductory data

Support for interdisciplinary teaching when introducing students to materials across a range of different engineering, science, and related courses. The data available with the GRANTA EduPack Introductory edition consists of:

MaterialUniverse

MaterialUniverse – Levels 1, 2 and 3, as described above.

The Elements The Elements – data on the elements of the Periodic Table.
Design Design – engage students of Engineering and Design through a product-centered, visually inspiring, interactive database.
Architecture

Architecture – adds pictures of architectural applications; data on where materials are used; bending moduli, hygrothermal, durability, and flammability properties.

Materials Science and Engineering

Materials Science & Engineering – functional, biological, and structural materials; fibers; phase diagrams; and data to illustrate process / structure /property relationships.

Bioengineering Bioengineering Level 2 – adds more data on: biological, bio-derived and bio-medical materials; biocompatibility; sterilizability; RoHS compliance and food grade ratings. Linked to the online ASM Medical Materials Database.
Medical Devices Medical Devices – inspire Biomedical engineering students by connecting materials data to information on fifty example devices, from spinal implants to intravascular catheters.
Sustainability Sustainability Level 2 – adds more data at Level 2 on: environmental properties of materials and data on energy systems, regulation, and the Nations of the world – Social, Economic and Geographic data.

GRANTA EduPack full data

The full GRANTA EduPack edition offers more advanced or industry-specific data for capstone design projects and advanced teaching centered around real-world challenges.  The data available is:

MaterialUniverse

All of the data in the Introductory edition, above.

Aerospace Aerospace –  extra temperature-dependent property data is added to the core MaterialUniverse data, which is combined into an integrated database with the MMPDS aero alloy and CMH-17 composites data.
Polymers

Polymers – the core MaterialUniverse data includes trade names, filler type, impact properties, and chemical resistance, and is augmented with and linked to the well-known Prospector Plastics data set, covering tens of thousands of commercially-available grades.

Eco Design

Eco Design – adds geo-economic data, restricted substances and critical materials, energy, carbon footprint and water usage.

Bioengineering Bioengineering Level 3 – adds more data at Level 3 on: biological, bio-derived and bio-medical materials; biocompatibility; sterilizability; RoHS compliance and food grade ratings. Linked to the online ASM Medical Materials Database.

Our data process

Granta’s team of materials experts, reviews and updates the Material and Process Universe data in GRANTA EduPack each year. Every record links to a list of the references used to create it. The team employs a hierarchical data checking scheme. Where data cannot be obtained from published sources (or measured), estimates are calculated (and clearly labelled) so that potential material options are not missed during selection studies due to missing properties.
