Granta provides resources and support for anyone teaching materials or related topics across the full range of disciplines in engineering, science, design, and sustainability. Our engaging, interactive, visual CES EduPack platform, and expansive Granta Education Hub, support students from an Introductory level through to advanced design projects. We coordinate a series of annual Materials Education Symposia.

Presenter

Dr. Claes Fredriksson has more than 15 years’ experience teaching Materials-related subjects to undergraduate and post graduate students in Sweden, Canada, Belgium and the U.S.A, mainly in Mechanical Engineering. After gaining an MSc in Engineering Physics and PhD in Theoretical Physics he worked in both theoretical and experimental research on polymers, metals and biomaterials. He has a passion for teaching and won a grant as part of Sweden’s Excellence in Teaching Programme to enable him to teach in the U.S.A. and facilitate the cross-pollination of pedagogical approaches.

Abstract

Life-long learning needs to be part of the solution for closing the skills-gap created by a rapid digital transition. It puts demands on educational tools for this purpose. Realistically, it requires a platform that can be used or remotely to provide the necessary flexibility for prospective users. Professional development and retraining are relevant examples of fertile areas for e-learning/distance learning.

The CES EduPack software platform (hereafter referred to as the software) was specifically developed to support materials teaching at the Engineering department of Cambridge University. It has evolved into a widely used standard tool for areas of both higher and continued education.

A significant number of engineering jobs for graduated students are concerned with design, manufacturing, maintenance or sales of complex technological products relying on safe high-performance materials. In this paper, experiences from key academic collaborators using our materials education tool are reported. In particular, the Open University of the UK has a history of using the software in their courses for life-long learning. There are also specific examples of the software being used in professional development, at other European Universities.

In our case, success-factor features include:
• Extensive support for self-sufficiency
• Embedded case studies and useful solutions to standard problems
• Software licensing enabling remote use of the tool
• A number of advanced textbooks (Mike Ashby) supplying detailed theoretical backgrounds

The presentation will be supported by relevant examples of the above.
