When materials are used for structural support, such as in buildings and general construction, the shape is as fundamental as the material properties themselves. The cross-section shape determines how effective the material is in fulfilling its structural function.

In this session, we’ll see how to account for this shape using the CES EduPack data table of standard structural sections. We’ll work through a case study that deals with selection of structural sections and complementary Finite Element simulations.

Presenters


Dr. Claes Fredriksson has more than 15 years’ experience teaching Materials-related subjects to undergraduate and post graduate students in Sweden, Canada, Belgium and the U.S.A, mainly in Mechanical Engineering. After gaining an MSc in Engineering Physics and PhD in Theoretical Physics he worked in both theoretical and experimental research on polymers, metals and biomaterials. He has a passion for teaching and won a grant as part of Sweden’s Excellence in Teaching Programme to enable him to teach in the U.S.A. and facilitate the cross-pollination of pedagogical approaches.


Dr. David Mercier. David fait partie de la Division Education de Granta Design, en support pour les universités et les établissements d’enseignement et de recherche en France et en Belgique en tant que responsable de développement. Il a obtenu son master et son doctorat en science des matériaux et en ingénierie de l’Université de Grenoble (France) et son expérience professionnelle est fortement liée aux domaines de la microélectronique et de la métallurgie. David a participé à plusieurs projets de recherche postdoctoraux en Allemagne et en Belgique pendant 6 ans, en particulier dans le domaine de la modélisation multi-échelle et de la caractérisation des propriétés mécaniques des matériaux par nanoindentation.
