80% of a product’s manufacturing cost is locked-in by the end of the conceptual design phase. Once a design concept is ‘fixed’ it becomes increasingly difficult to change aspects of that design. So how can we quickly evaluate costs at this stage of the process – a point at which the design is likely to vary with the choice of material, and when the detailed information required to run a cost model has not been defined?

Charlie Bream is the Senior Product Manager for CES Selector at Granta Design. After completing his PhD on recycling of thermoset composites at Brunel University, he spent 15 years in industry working on the development of lightweight materials and structures for British Aerospace (Space Systems), Pera International, and NXT before joining Granta in 2007.
